What Type of Table Saw Do I Need?

We have divided our table saws into four main categories. To some extent, these categories can each overlap with each other. They vary in terms of size and portability of table saw, with the lightest saws suited to the most light-duty tasks, and the heavy stationary saws suited to the heavy-duty tasks.

1. Bench-Top Table Saws

These are the lightest and most portable of the table saws. If you are looking for something to do light to medium work on, that you can transport from site to site then this is your best option. They usually weigh under 100lbs and are compact in size. Suited for standard voltage, not only are these light to carry, they are also light on your wallet.

2. Contractor Table Saws

The contractor table saw weighs in between 200 and 300 lbs, and can still be transported from site to site (The name ‘contractor’ comes from this feature, when contractors first started lugging them from job to job). Suited for medium to heavy duty use, they are more stable than the Bench Tops. They also have more power and are longer lasting. These are powerful enough that they may suit you as a home table saw, but they are portable if needs be.

3. Cabinet Table Saws

These big boys are not for moving, usually consisting of a cast iron saw table with a motor enclosed in the cabinet underneath. Typically weighing around 600lbs, once they are in place, they are set for life. Long-lasting, and fitted with high performance parts, cabinet table saws offer greatest cut capacity and stability. The cabinet also serves to contain the dust and to reduce noise. These are for the serious woodworker, and with 3 to 5 horsepower (sometimes even more) they have more than enough power to get any job done.

4. Hybrid Table Saws

Essentially, the hybrid table saw is a cross between the cabinet and the contractor saws. You can think of them as a less heavy cabinet saw. They weigh a little less and have a little less power. Often they come with a cabinet, but what often sets them apart from a cabinet table saw are the trunnions (that’s the bit that holds the arbor assembly and motor in place – basically holding the blade in alignment and absorbing vibrations. Hybrid saws use the lighter contractor saw trunnions, which hang from underneath the table, as opposed to being mounted on the top of the cabinet (as in cabinet saws). So if you want more power than a contractor saw, but don’t need to go all out for a cabinet saw, then at around 2 Horsepower, the hybrid table saw is your best option!
