When you need something with a bit more drilling power than your regular basic drill or impact driver, it’s time to reach for a hammer drill. Masonry or even concrete stands no chance against a top quality hammer drill – and here is where you will find one! If you have been using the same hammer drill for a few years now, you may be surprised at exactly what the newest models are capable of – more power, more control, more versatility. Here we have given a guide of the best models, and found the lowest prices for them!

Check out our interactive tables and the advice that follows for all the information you will need in order to pick the best hammer drill for your needs.

The tables have been split into the 2 main categories of Hammer Drill:

  1. Cordless Hammer Drill
  2. Corded Hammer Drill

If you are likely to only be working with woodwork or other ‘lighter’ jobs around the home, a hammer drill may be too much for your needs. Read the information carefully to make the most informed decision, and click here to look at basic drills and impact drivers.

Which Hammer Drill Do I Need?

Hammer drills are what you will need for heavy duty, sustained work. This is the drill you will need for working with steel, granite or concrete, but won’t be quite as practical for light work, or drilling in hard to reach areas. They work by providing a hammering motion in the direction you are drilling – thus hammering and drilling at once. This is the last word in drilling through hard materials – wood, steel, concrete etc.

They vary in power and you need to be aware of what you wish to use it for before you purchase. Check out the maximum drill capacity for whichever material you are going to be needing to bore holes into. As a general rule of thumb, the corded drills will pack a lot more punch, and you will appreciate that if you have a lot of holes to drill into concrete, for example.

Obviously the greatest advantage of the cordless drill is the portability and ease of use, so if you are going to be doing work far from a power outlet then you will need to go cordless. Click the links on our comparison table to get further information – reading everyone’s Amazon reviews (positive AND negative) often gives a great honest impression of a drill’s real pros and cons – more so than the manufacturer’s site. For cordless, you are going to want something that stays nicely balanced, can bring the power when it needs, to and with a good set of batteries for long and frequent use.

So Which is the Best Hammer Drill?

‘Which is the best hammer drill?’ is one question, but the more important question is definitely ‘Which is the best hammer drill for me?’ Below I have listed my favourite from each category, and said a little bit about why I like them, but be sure to make your own mind up based on your needs, and your price range. Check with the comparison tables above, and check out our more extensive list of product reviews.
