Do I Really Need Power Tools?

Perhaps you have stumbled onto this site because you are still making up your mind about power tools. You might be wondering what all the fuss is about? Do you really need to invest in these power tools? Can’t you just get it done with a trusty hammer and saw?

The answer is this: You DO need power tools.

I’m not saying throw away all your old hand tools – they still have their place, and for some jobs their quiet precision is exactly what you need. But if you are wanting to be a home hobbyist or to take on some larger projects, then it’s time to invest in some high quality power tools.

The greatest advantage you will soon discover is how much faster you can get work done. For those few tasks that you could do with hand tools (e.g. cutting wood) you will be amazed at how much time and effort you save with a power saw. Why do the heavy lifting when a motor can do it for you? You will easily work at ten times the speed as you would with hand tools.

On top of that, there are many jobs that would be impossible without power tools. Drilling and screwing into hard materials are practically impossible with hand tools. But with a cordless (or corded) drill, or impact driver, or hammer drill – you can spend hours working away, turning that spare room into something incredible. Some even more extreme tasks are made possible with power tools, for example drilling into concrete! You can buy power tools that will make this possible at home (although be sure to take all necessary safety precautions!).

Here are a few examples of tools that we think are necessary in every household:

1. Cordless Drill

This one practically goes without saying. I feel like I shouldn’t even be writing this. There surely isn’t a home in America that does not have a cordless power drill by now! Unless it’s yours? Well we recommend you remedy that as soon as possible!

This is the first power tool you should buy. Check out our reviews to see our recommendations. The cornerstone of so many home improvement tasks is drilling holes and driving screws or fasteners. A good drill will enable you to drill everything from small pilot holes to larger holes. When it comes to driving, you should be able to use a good driver on everything from tiny screws to larger lag bolts. If you get a combo drill / impact driver then you’ll open up even more options.

2. Air Compressor

The next power tool that can make a big difference to your life as a handyman is an air compressor, be that a portable air compressor or a stationary one. The main reason these are so useful is because they are so versatile. They work with pneumatic tools, adding a whole new level of torque and power to your tools.

Air compressors can be used to power a huge range of tools, including nail guns, sanders, saws, tyre inflators, hammers and many others. You can use them to inflate tyres, build decking, fix your roof, paint a fence and so much more. Useful for everything from small home improvement jobs to larger scale professional projects.
